Coating Supervisor
Coating Supervisor programme must be completed by candidates needing to renew their industry recognised Coating Supervisor ID card
Coating Supervisor programme must be completed by candidates needing to renew their industry recognised Coating Supervisor ID card
Lesson 1 - Duties of a Supervisor
Objective: To understand the requirements of the supervisor, and his or her duties to the employer and employee.
The role of a supervisor could be conducted by a manager or foreman, depending on the type of organisation and general duties. The supervisor is expected to:
- Represent the company, looking after the work and workers during their activities.
- Have a good level of experience, maturity and fully understand the requirements of his/her job.
Lesson 2 - COSHH Assessment, Risk Assessment and Method Statements
Objective: To understand the requirements of conducting COSHH Assessments, and the obligations of the employer and employees.
- COSHH, Control of Substances Hazardous (Potentially harmful) to Health.
- All companies must assess the potential risks to personnel.
- No work should commence without COSHH Assessments, these must be conducted by competent personnel.
Lesson 3 - Material Health & Safety Data Sheets (Safety Data Sheets)
Objective: To understand the requirements for health and safety data sheets, usually referred to as material safety data sheet, from the coating manufacturers.
To understand that:
- It is a legal requirement that a material safety data sheet is supplied to the buyer of the product.
- The material safety data sheet should be made available at the workplace to the operative.
- The format of the material safety data sheets can vary from supplier to supplier.
- You should not use products without having the material safety data sheets.
Lesson 4 - Painting Specifications
Objective:
To understand the basic principles of a painting specification
- A painting specification is usually included in a contract.
- Painting specifications can be simple one-sheet documents or very thorough, complex documents.
- The painting specification usually forms part of a contract.
- The painting specification is usually held by the Supervisor, Foreman or Inspector.
Lesson 5 - ISO Visual Preparation Standards
Objective: To understand the standards that are developed and used in the coatings industry, specifically the standards used in surface preparation.
- There are numerous standards used around the globe for surface preparation and application of protective coatings.
- There are a number of Institutes and associations who develop, endorse or use the standards
Lesson 6 - SSPC VIS 1
Objective:
The objective of this training unit is to give a full and comprehensive review of the SSPC-VIS1 Guide titled 'Guide and Reference Photographs for Steel Surfaces prepared by Dry Abrasive Blast Cleaning'.
On completion of this training unit the student should be able to use the visual standards in inspection duties and activities.
The SSPC: The Society for Protective Coatings has a number of visual standards which are used in conjunction with written standards, of which are also joint standards with NACE International (National Association of Corrosion Engineers). This training unit along with subsequent units will fully detail the visual standards and how they are used in the Protective Coatings Industry. SSPC has allowed the use of the photographs used in these training units, however the original visual standards must be used for coating inspection activities. These standards are available at SSPC: www.sspc.org
Lesson 7 - SSPC VIS 3
Objective:
The objective of this training unit is to give a full and comprehensive review of the SSPC-VIS 3 Visual Guide titled ‘Guide and Reference Photographs for Steel Surfaces prepared by Power and Hand Tool Cleaning’
On completion of this training unit the student should be able to use the SSPC-VIS3 Guide.
Lesson 8 - SSPC VIS 4 - NACE VIS 7
Objective:
The objective of this training unit is to give a full and comprehensive review of SSPC-VIS 4/NACE VIS 7, titled ‘Guide and Reference photographs for steel surfaces prepared by water jetting’.
On completion of this training unit the student should be able to use the guide for inspection duties.
Lesson 9 - SSPC VIS 5 - NACE VIS 9
Objective:
The objective of this training unit is to give a full and comprehensive review of the SSPC-VIS 5/NACE VIS 9 visual guide which is titled “Guide and reference photographs for steel prepared by wet abrasive blast cleaning”
On completion of this training unit the student should be able to use the SSPC-VIS 5/NACE VIS 9 Guide.
Lesson 10 - Product Data Sheets
Objective: To understand how to read and understand the manufacturer's product data sheet, and the importance of using the product within the manufacturer's guidelines.
- All coatings have product data sheets.
- Do not consider using a product until you have read and understood the data sheet.
- Do not confuse the general data sheet with the health and safety data sheet.
- We will go through a list of items typically contained within a product data sheet.
Lesson 11 - Basic Paint Technology
Objective: To understand the basic constituents and properties of coatings used for corrosion control, and gain an insight into coating systems.
Lesson 12 - Paint Failure
Objective
The objective of this training unit to to briefly review and understand the main types of coating failures.
We will review 28 types and give a description of the possible causes.
Lesson 13 - Paint Inspection Part 1 ( Theoretical )
Objective: To understand the requirements for painting Inspection and the role a paint inspector plays on painting contracts. A review of basic instruments and documentation will becovered in this session.
- Painting Inspectors are widely used on Industrial coating contracts.
- The Client or contract will dictate the level of inspection and the qualification of the personnel.
